Leadership Lessons From The 14th Dalai Lama

On June 21, 2011, in Blog, Strategic Leadership, by Christine Glasco

On a sunny afternoon in May, Southern Methodist University conferred the Doctorate of Humane Letters on The 14th Dalai Lama for his ”lifelong leadership in promoting peace, compassion and interreligious understanding.”

As he accepted the honorary degree, The Dalai Lama offered his particular brand of wisdom as it relates to leadership:

»        The world belongs to humans, not kings…

This observation reminds all leaders that we work for the good of our constituencies and we gain the most by ‘living’ the concepts of Servant Leadership.

»        Leadership should be honest and should carry a sense of responsibility…

He made us remember that words like ethics (despite recent headlines), honor and accountability are not just words but must be the leader’s compass. The quality of the leader’s decisions, performance and contributions are based on personal values that are in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision and values.

»        The whole world is one entity, one body…

He knows that effective leaders do not need a ‘diversity program’ to ensure that they make a deep commitment to fostering an organization culture that is based on engagement and inclusion.  He also teaches that all life, cultures, ethnicities and belief systems have value and, if honored, can add wind to the sails of any organization.

»        Leaders must make compassionate actions…and not keep ill feelings towards a person.  If there is something serious, [you] must take counter measures…

In essence, The Dalai Lama unequivocally pronounced that leaders have the duty to make the tough decisions, take appropriate actions and apply the proportional deterrents in a critical situation.

Questions for you to consider:

  •  When was the last time you really thought about the broader universal concepts of leadership and pledged to fully invest time, money and effort in developing your leadership competencies?
  • How will you evidence your understanding that the world belongs to humans, not ‘kings’?
